Taking a moment to relive one of the best artistic times of my life.. The Root. (r-oo-Uh-oot). 2021 has some challenges so remembering this brings me strength and encouragement for doing things you never thought possible.
Made the clay and glaze from the sand from this beach.. crafted the sculpture; fired it in a giant kiln… carried it out to the coast for the photo shoot for gallery show. The Root and it’s babies emerging from the sea. {Maybe to be posted another time.}
A short story version …
The creation part of the story is cool to me, assignment was to create something literally larger than yourself. .. (fast forward to the beach photos shoot day) my Mom came to Oregon (go Ducks) to help me lug these creatures out to the sea in my pick up – wrapped in blankets and tied to the truck bed with bungees like some kind of vertical dead body… I dragged my sculpture through the reeds of the dunes to get to the sea.
We crossed paths with an older man who looked at me with an odd sense of wonder (as in wonder wtf you are doing with that thing) and he said.. “ What is that? A Ruut???” and I said it is whatever you want it to be..
He left confused and probably making some connection between my life in Eugene Oregon and the explanation of this odd effort to drag a sculpture to the sea .. But it stuck with me forever.
It’s a root.
To you.
To me, not so much but do enjoy your root version.
Perspective.
