The Awe Factor

Super inspirational study found that shows something  we can feel inherently as true but now scientists validate us! Yea!

“Awe”.. That feeling of wonderment and kinda mini mind blowing overwhelm you feel when seeing something so beautiful or so amazing,  magical or majestic you can’t really get your head around it.   That moment in time – is really good for you!

Some common examples would be in nature – huge mountains, amazing clouds, the horizon across the ocean…    but it can also be philosophical insight, scientific wonder  or the inspiration found when hearing or seeing another human do something just mind blowing. Kindness. Compassion.  You know those rare moments when you say ok maybe I shouldn’t wear that shirt that says “I love my dog more than people”. Or wait maybe I still do.

So back to the science, dogs aside.  Stories were collected from all over the world and get this! The words like “whoa” and “wow” were recognized across cultures. Super cool

To me one of the more interesting finds:  “Awe” stimulates a shift in the immune system. Cytokines are chemical messengers that signal the immune system to work harder. They are important for a pro-inflammatory response to kill pathogens and heal wounds. Several positive emotions, such as joy and love, lowered levels of the cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6), an indicator of inflammation levels.

However, the greatest predictor of reduced cytokine levels, up to three times more than joy, was the feeling of awe.

Wow. I feel better already. Going to go out and look for magic moments of awe-yeah.
